This research addresses strategies to counteract the lag in STEM areas within rural Colombian basic education by supplementing limited technological infrastructure with visual programming environments and interactive hardware. This study focuses on sixth-grade students at a rural school in the Department of Cauca (Colombia), who were found to possess low-to-medium levels of computational and systems thinking. The research evaluated the impact of a sequential pedagogical approach (based on the use of Scratch, Flowcode, and the assembly of programmable hardware) aimed at enhancing both forms of thinking among the students. The study's findings are structured around four main areas. First, the pedagogical feasibility of the approach in resource-constrained rural classrooms was demonstrated, as students completed the instructional sequence and developed a final integrative device. Second, a quantitative analysis was conducted using two instruments: a pre-test/post-test comparison of computational and systemic thinking skills, and a STEM motivation test that included aspects of collaborative work. The pre-test/post-test comparison revealed notable progress. Specifically, there was highly significant improvement (exceeding 20 percentage points) in decomposition and abstraction skills, moderate progress in modeling, and more modest gains (less than 10 points) in feedback and justification. Very positive levels were achieved in the motivation test. Third, the analysis was complemented by qualitative instruments (such as structured interviews and classroom observation), which revealed high levels of enthusiasm, the overcoming of initial apprehension regarding hardware, and the adoption of a trial-and-error approach, although difficulties in verbalizing errors persisted. Fourth and finally, recommendations for curriculum planning emerged, as the results suggest that skills such as feedback and justification require further development in levels beyond the sixth grade.
